3 key steps in a pitch

There are lots of ways to think about how to pitch your startups. One of the simplest but most effective ways is to determine what checkboxes you need to hit at each stage of the pitch. When using this method there are really three key steps that you need to take. Let’s dive in…

Don’t fall behind in the fight for venture funding!

  1. Perspective (< 1min) - Without the first minute of your pitch, you need to share your perspective. If investors don’t immediately know how to think about your company and how to look at it then the rest of your pitch is simply down to luck. You are hoping that they stumble upon the right perspective or are wowed by you/your figures.

  2. Credibility (<4mins) - Within 4 minutes, you need to establish your credibility. This is both your credibility as an individual and the credibility of the business/business plan. This is why if you are at the pre-seed stage, many investors will advise having your team early, and if you are in a later stage, many will advise having your traction early. These are the two slides that help most with establishing your credibility.

  3. Compelled (<10mins) - By the 10-minute mark (normally halfway through a normal pitch), you need the investor to feel compelled to make an investment. At this stage, you should have already gotten them convinced that this is an investment that they want to learn more about, and you should no longer be pushing the boulder up the hill, but the room should be turning with momentum on your side. If you don’t feel this by the 10-minute market, then you should consider using a new approach to finish off the pitch.
