Communicate your Values
Read time 1.6 minutes.
When I talk to many of you, the most common answer I get when I ask, “What is the best pitcher ever?” is Steve Jobs.
It makes sense; he is known for his amazing, persuasive, awe-inspiring presentations. Despite this, 99% of you come to me without having followed any of Steve Jobs’ pitching advice.
One of his key pieces of advice is to build your pitch and brand around VALUES.
Think Different was a massive marketing campaign for Apple. It was intended to restore investor confidence in the company and help Apple build a brand around emotions while Microsoft relied on Data. The result? For decades after, Apple has sold lower spec devices at 3-4x the price. Jobs himself always admitted that Apple was for people who were different, for people who looked beyond the numbers, who cared about experiences, feelings, change, and emotions, not just getting the best value device. Saying Apple sells lower-spec products at a higher price isn’t an insult, it’s their vision. It’s a compliment to their brand building.

When you pitch, you also need to communicate values and connect emotionally.
If you hear investors talk, they say that they invest in the Founders, that certain founders are special or are doing something unique, thinking differently.
What are they really saying? Their values aligned with mine. Their mission was something I wanted to support. Their vision is a world I want to live in.
Founders often think their pitch is about, (1) their story, (2) the data. The reality is that it’s all about values. It’s about getting investors to believe in what you want to accomplish and aligning their values with yours.
So the next time you pitch, aim to communicate not only who you are and what you are doing but WHY. Not a superficial WHY, but a real deep WHY. What will society look like because your product exists, and WHY is this the future we should all want?
