Recently, I have seen more debate online about whether founders need a pitch deck. It is becoming increasingly popular for founders to avoid traditional fundraising methods and try to implement novel techniques that help them stand out. Especially with the rise in AI, it appears many founders feel that a pitch deck is no longer optimal and can’t present their company in the best light.

Let’s discuss whether you need a pitch deck and why.

While equities, gold, bitcoin hover near highs, the art market is showing signs of early recovery after one of the longest downturns since the 1990s.

Each investing environment is unique, but after the dot com crash, contemporary and post-war art grew ~24% a year for a decade, and after 2008, it grew ~11% annually for 12 years.*

Overall, the segment has outpaced the S&P by 15 percent with near-zero correlation from 1995 to 2025.

The purpose of a pitch deck is to create intrigue. To get someone to want to learn more about your business. It is true that today, you can do that in many ways, including leveraging social media, conferences, etc.

Despite this, the hard fact remains that most investors need to have a way to judge your company and learn more about your business before they can justify meeting with you. A pitch deck remains the best way to do this, although a one-pager or short memo is also a suitable alternative.

What you no longer need (and never did) was a pitch deck that you use when presenting. This is an aid but not a requirement. Again, however, you need some summary of your presentation to leave with investors, so a deck or memo serves this purpose.

In short, don’t think about whether you need a deck or not. Think about it this way: you need (i) a document you can send to get people interested in meeting you (ii) a document to summarize your company after the meeting. Pitch decks can be used in both scenarios, but if you have a better alternative, then the deck can always be substituted.
