We hear about the importance of having customers that are evangelists and how this group has come to define the success of companies like Apple, but do you really know who they are or how they can help you?

What is an Evangelist?

An evangelist is someone completely separated from the company who learns about the company and becomes so obsessed with your product that they start to promote it for you.

An evangelist can be either a VC who starts to help make introductions, pitch you to other investors, etc. or a customer who tries to get others to buy.

Role in Fundraising

Evangelists are key to fundraising. At the pre-seed stage, many investors want to see that you have traction and market validation of your idea. Customer evangelists help provide this evidence by showing how much your product can help people.

VC evangelists are also a key part of the fundraising process because they speak the language of investors and can provide a third-party endorsement for your business, helping to de-risk the business in the mind of investors.

Overall, if your business has evangelists, you should leverage them, get them to make introductions, provide testimonials, and talk to investors. These are people who can communicate how great you are to investors with genuine emotion and no self-interest.
