Founder’s Role in Company Narrative

Hey Persuaders!

Last week, I got 20+ emails from readers (like you) who had big wins after buying my course. This week, I will screenshot some of those wins and explain the strategies they used in more depth so that you can mimic them.

Founder’s Role in Company Narrative
Read time 2.0 minutes.

As I’ve previously shared, I’m not a fan of the “Founder Story”.

Investors might claim to invest in people, but the truth is that they invest in big ideas with the potential to make them money. The only reason they care about the founder is to know:

  1. Can you execute?

  2. Will you persevere?

So stop wasting 5-15 minutes of your 20-minute pitch talking about yourself and start learning how to check those boxes in under 1 minute.

Can you execute?

At some point during the pitch, you NEED to explain why you and your team are the right people to take your business to the next stage. You can show this through:

  1. Industry experience

  2. Past startup success

  3. Past business experience

  4. Past growth of this company

  5. Relevant education

Sandhill Markets is the “Robinhood for Pre-IPO Startups”, letting investors get into private deals like Stripe, Databricks, Discord, Anduril, Neuralink and OpenAI. Investing in these blue-chip startups typically involves $100k+ minimums and up to 20% in fees or carry. Sandhill lets you invest as little as $5k with 0% fees.

Can you persevere?

If a founder gives up when things get tough, the investor will lose their money. You need to show that you have:

  1. A connection to the problem

  2. A determined/courageous personality

You can show that you have a connection to the problem in under 30 seconds by explaining why you are working on this company.

You can show you are determined/courageous by using a quick story that is under 30 seconds.

Takeaway

Raising venture capital is about knowing what VCs need to hear to say YES and presenting that information in the most concise, persuasive and emotional manner. A long Founder Story, while sounding like a great idea, actually goes against all pitching advice. The truth is too many times, founders pitch me, and after 20 minutes, I know their life story but have no idea what their company does. Don’t fall into this trap.
