A few weeks ago, I talked about the importance of an active tone, saying, “We are building” instead of “We will build.”

Recently, a few of you who’ve booked strategy calls have started coming to me with pitches that use an active tone while remaining stuck in the present.

What do I mean by that? I mean that even though you are talking about how you are in motion and you are DOING instead of WAITING (great change!), you are still only talking about what is happening today and not bringing in aspects of the past and future.

The result is that you have a pitch that seems off. Many VCs might not be able to put their finger on it, but in their gut, something is wrong about the pitch, and this is because you are talking as if you’ve gone from A to B and are now going from B to C but you never actually talk about A or C your focus is all on B.

How to fix this

Make sure that when you start the storytelling part of your pitch, you sit down like they would have made you do in 5th grade and write out where the story starts, where it takes place and what the ending is.

That beginning, middle and end all need to be very clear in your mind so that you can effectively communicate them.

For most of you, the beginning is either (i) when you first started to solve the problem or (ii) when you started the company.

The middle is where you are today.

The end is where you want to go if everything works out perfectly.
