Nailing your Demo Slide

A demo slide used to be a standard slide on most pitch decks, but nowadays, it’s missing from 90% of the decks that I see.

When sending a deck via email, if possible, I’d highly recommend offering some demo or sample so that investors can see, feel and understand your product. Lots can get lost in translation, but when investors use a product, they can know precisely what they are being asked to invest in without you needing to describe it.

The more interesting issue regarding demo slides is when and how to use them when pitching in person.

The role of a demo slide in a pitch is:

  1. Regain investor attention - Often, after you’ve been talking for 10-15 minutes, investors start to zone out. Using a demo slide can help you regain attention so that they are attentive during the last 5 minutes of your pitch after the demo.

  2. Provide validation - When pitching, you're constantly telling investors how great your company is. All of this is coming from you directly. A demo is a chance for them to validate this praise from another source (themselves). Similar to how a company can tell you how great their product is, but you likely won’t buy till you read the reviews, this is your chance to share that secondary source of validation that isn’t coming directly from you.
