Barack Obama’s 5 Super Speaking Techniques

Barak Obama is one of the best public speakers of our generation. No matter your political affiliation, it cannot be denied that he had a unique way of speaking that was able to capture attention and resonate with listeners.

Luckily his way of speaking can be summarized in just 5 techniques:

  1. Emotional Storytelling

  2. Eye Contact

  3. Tone

  4. Empathy

  5. Dignity

Emotional Storytelling
Utilizing the inherent potency of narratives, Obama's speeches frequently integrate a compelling story, often initiated with one, encouraging the listener to grasp the situation, resonate with the distress, and participate in the hope of the central character. Stories are very important. They can make us laugh or cry. They can make us want to do something.

Eye Contact
When someone is scared of public speaking, aside from picturing the audience naked, they are often told to look at one person and speak directly to them. Obama mastered the ability to do this on a mass scale. He would look at individuals in the crowd, changing his glances every few seconds while occasionally staring right at the camera as well. This helped him connect with viewers and listeners and made his speeches feel personal as if they were directed specifically at you.

Tone
Obama is well known for his long pauses; these weren’t by accident. He was a master of using speed, pauses and volume to change his tone and effectively communicate his point. If you start to pay attention to your tone, specifically using more pauses and occasionally speaking more slowly then you’ll significantly increase the impact of your words.

Empathy
Conveying his personal experiences and familial anecdotes with an earnestness that strikes a chord of authenticity, he radiates passion, emotion, and humour that are manifested in his expressions and body language, making him appear deeply human and relatable. Use personal stories to relate to people and show that you understand their feelings. This creates a strong connection with your audience.

Dignity
Obama is often described as appearing Presidential. Contrasted with other political figures, he didn’t rely on yelling and screaming like Hillary Clinton to emphasize his points. He also didn’t resort to derogatory comments like Trump. Those strategies (especially Trump’s) may work for specific people but for the vast majority, an appearance of dignity, value, and confidence is most likely to hit home with listeners, especially if your audience is venture capitalists.
