Last week I had the opportunity to attend the Rarebreed Annual Summit; it was a great time meeting many VCs, LPs and founders.
I got one major takeaway from the event when it came to pitching that I needed to share with all of you.
Background
Much of the event looked at venture capital's current state and discussed the market conditions and movements.
One of the most common complaints from VCs/LPs that I talked to was that in a down market, many founders ignore what made them different and try so hard to derisk their businesses that they become too conservative, dull and uninteresting.

A new perspective
What makes your startup unique from market incumbents is that you are not forced to do things the way everyone else in your industry has. You are the new player and can play the game your way!
The reason investors choose you over your competitors is because of what you are doing differently, because of your new approach and fresh perspective.
So if you are raising capital, don’t feel like you need to become bland to derisk your business and raise funds. Instead, double down on your uniqueness. Recognize that it’s what sets you apart, and take the time to explain why it will allow you to dominate your market.
